OUR HISTORY
1999
RMIT Motorsport began as RMIT Racing. Debuting in the first Australian FSAE competition in 2001.
RMIT Racing was conceived by RMIT’s Professor Simon Watkins, who would see out the project until 2008.
In its 2001 debut, RMIT Racing finished 14th overall.
2004
RMIT Racing’s debut on the international stage. We would compete across 3 continents, placing first overall in the UK and Australia.
In two years, we would dominate both the Michigan and Melbourne competition.
2007
RMIT Racing would start 2007 by dominating in the UK, this time at the world-famous Silverstone Circuit.
The following year would become the last international outing for RMIT Racing. Finishing a respectable 5th in Michigan. These results would send RMIT Racing to the top of the World Standings that year.
2008
In early 2008, Professor Watkins would begin planning a project the likes of Formula Student had yet to see; an all-electric Formula Student car.
The proof of concept would be built in time for the 2008 Australasia competition, where the R08e concept would run in events alongside its combustion counterparts.
2010
RMIT Electric Racing would officially debut this year, running alongside the original RMIT Racing. At this point, both teams would only compete domestically.
2016
The introduction to the world of aerodynamics for RMIT Motorsport. RMIT Racing would design the first kit for the R16c.
This kit would then be adapted for the following R17e, the first RMIT Electric car with wings.
2019
This year was a fast one for RMIT Motorsport. Both our IC and EV vehicles were record setters, being our fastest cars ever produced (so far).
Both cars would sweep the 2020 FS Sydney competition before the ride of the global pandemic.
